South Dakota Microbreweries

Black Hills & Badlands

The Black Hills & Badlands region is South Dakota's great western playground — the pine-covered mountains that rise from the prairie around Rapid City, Deadwood, and Spearfish, and the otherworldly striped rock of Badlands National Park to the east. It is also, by a wide margin, the beeriest corner of the state. Firehouse Brewing Company has been pouring in a converted 1915 Rapid City firehouse since 1991, making it South Dakota's oldest brewery, while Crow Peak in Spearfish, Miner Brewing in Hill City, and the taprooms of Deadwood and Lead give every mountain town its own local pint. With Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and Spearfish Canyon all within an hour of each other, this is one of America's most scenic places to plan a beer trail.
